Mayu Tsuruta began her acting career in 1988. Since then she has had roles in a wide range of dramas, movies, theatre productions, and commercials. In 1996, she received the Japan Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the film “Listen, the Voice of Wadatsumi”. In more recent years, she featured in the television dramas “Marumo no Okite“, “Drunkenness Kotouji”, “Stock Price Crash”, “Criminal Syndrome”, and “Nippon Boroyado Travelogue”. She has also had roles in “Sayonara Valley”, “64-Rokuyon”, “DESTINY Kamakura Monogatari”, “Run the Sea” and “Nichi Nichi Kore Koujitsu”, among other films.
Her talents extend beyond acting. Drawing from her experiences on travel programs and documentaries, Mayu was appointed Goodwill Ambassador to the 4th Conference on African Development in 2008. She also found time to be an author, writing such travel essays as “Nippon Saiyuki Kojiki Sequel” and “I Was Standing in Jerusalem while Touring Shrines” (both Gentosha publishing Inc.).
